727area has new update 1 day ago 2024 Sunburst Awards: New York Yankees games 21-23
Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images Rays fall to 12-11 after three game series in Yankee Stadium “Sunburst Awards” is a series-by-series evaluation of player performance, where four different awards are given out after each series: Offensive player of the series, defensive player of the series, pitcher of the series, and highlight play of the series. This edition will be covering the seventh series of the season, where the Tampa Bay Rays took on the New York Yankees from April 19th through April 21st, a three game series in Yankee Stadium. The Rays head up to the Bronx to take on AL East rival New York Yankees for the first time in 2024. Game 1: Rays - 3 Yankees - 5 (recap) Game 2: Rays - 2 Yankees - 0 (recap) Game 3: Rays - 4 Yankees - 5 (recap) Offensive Sunburst Award: Richie Palacios Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images Palacios shined at the plate and on the basepaths in this homecoming series, shining in all three games with hundreds of his family in attendance. In game one, Palacios recorded two hits, two runs, and an RBI. This included his second home run of the season to give the Rays a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning. In game two, Palacios scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th to give the Rays a 1-0 lead. The outfielder then rounded out the series with a hit, walk, and run scored in game three of the series. This is Palacios’ first Sunburst win since opening weekend, and his first in the offensive category. Pitching Sunburst Award: Zack Eflin Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images Eflin wins his second consecutive Pitching Sunburst Award with a premier debut in Yankee stadium, going six scoreless innings allowing just three hits no walks while striking out six. The Rays needed every bit of Eflin’s elite start too, as the game went scoreless through nine innings before the Rays broke through and took it 2-0 in the 10th. The right hander has brought his WHIP down to 1.06 now on the year, as he’s starting to get into a groove in late April. Defensive Sunburst Award: Jose Caballero Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images Caballero continued his dominance in the field this weekend at Yankee Stadium, with highlight play after highlight play. Caballero has had an incredible month defensively, with his being his second Defensive Sunburst of the season so far, matching Jose Siri as the only Ray to accomplish that feat. Highlight Sunburst Award: Jose Caballero Photo by Jim McIsaac/Getty Images There wasn’t much to be excited about offensively in Saturday’s game, with no runs being scored through the first nine innings, but Caballero’s go-ahead double to finally break the scoreless tie earns him this edition’s Highlight Sunburst Award. The 27-year-olds clutch extra inning RBI rounded out his fantastic weekend with his second Sunburst of the series and fifth of the season. Conclusion After losing the series two games to one versus the Yankees, the Rays drop to last place in a competitive AL East, however they are still just three and a half games back from first place in the division on the young season. The Rays follow up their trip to New York with a three game series at home against the Detroit Tigers, a three game series from Monday to Wednesday. First pitch on Monday is set for 6:50 PM, Where the Rays look to bounce back from their first series loss since April third.
727area has new update 1 day ago Rays 4, Yankees 5: Civale’s Collapse Too Much For Rays To Recover
Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports Luis Gil shines for the Yankees with nine strikeouts in a narrow 5-4 victory over Tampa Bay, handing the Rays their first road series loss of the season. The Tampa Bay Rays almost pulled off an improbable comeback against the New York Yankees, but as we all know, almost doesn’t count in the standings. The Yankees narrowly defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4, handing the Rays their first loss in a road rubber game and their first road series loss of the season. Luis Gil was truly king of the hill as the 25-year-old overpowered the Rays for his first MLB win in three years. A fifth-inning meltdown by Rays’ pitcher Aaron Civale certainly helped his cause. The Yankees offense was very effective at converting mistakes into runs. In the bottom of the first, after with two baserunners thanks to two walks and two outs, Anthony Rizzo hit an RBI single to give New York an early 1-0 lead. Luis Gil was a formidable presence on the mound, striking out nine Rays hitters with a mix of fastballs, changeups, and sliders. Essentially the only blemish on Gil’s performance was a balk that allowed José Caballero to score the Rays’ first run and the only run he allowed. His command and velocity were key factors in keeping the Rays’ bats silent. Turns out stealing home doesn't have to involve a mad dash. pic.twitter.com/St5ResmIjD— Tampa Bay Rays (@RaysBaseball) April 21, 2024 Civale started the bottom of the fifth getting Juan Soto and Aaron Judge with groundouts to shortstop. With those two bats retired, it should have just been a matter of time to get the third out, but everything fell apart instead. Civale, who had been effectively managing the Yankees’ hitters, suddenly lost control. Civale’s lapse led to a sequence of walks that loaded the bases, setting the stage for Alex Verdugo, who delivered a crucial two-run single. Two more consecutive RBI singles from Jose Trevino and Oswaldo Cabrera extended the Yankees’ lead to 5-1, ending Civale’s day. Despite the setback, Erasmo Ramirez provided a masterclass in staying calm while everything is on fire, entering the game in relief of Civale. Ramirez pitched with poise and calm, curbing the Yankees’ offense and giving the Rays a fighting chance if they manage to claw back into the game. His performance should, for the moment, quiet critics on if he still can contribute to this bullpen. Kept afloat on by Ramirez’s efforts, the Rays showed commendable tenacity in their comeback attempt. In the eighth inning, they rallied as Amed Rosario hit a two-run double followed by an RBI single from Curtis Mead, cutting the deficit to just one run. Ain't nobody hotter than Amed Rosario! #RaysUp pic.twitter.com/FJEN4u1u90— Bally Sports Sun: Rays (@BallyRays) April 21, 2024 The Yankees, however, managed to preserve their lead in the final inning with Victor González securing the save, getting the final on a fluke play that deflected off his glove, and he recovered to get the ball to Anthony Rizzo to get out a sliding Harold Ramirez. Sliding into first base will never make sense to me since you slow your momentum on a close play. An incredible play to win it for the @Yankees! pic.twitter.com/fw1mKeWfw1— MLB (@MLB) April 21, 2024 The loss probably stings more when you overcome a deficit and get within striking distance of a comeback and a win. Especially, after this Rays team has shown that resilience this year on the road. If this team wants to hang another postseason banner, they will have to find a way to scrap out wins from games like today. The Rays return to Tropicana Field tomorrow to face the Detroit Tigers. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:50 p.m.
